Performed by Where Water Meets (Emily Sheppard and Yyan Ng) with eel researcher Dr Malcolm Johnson, this show features the world's first eel-skin instruments.
Dive into the murky depths and uncover the secret life of Tasmania's short-finned eel. Spanning deep time to the present day, this immersive performance follows one of nature's greatest migrations from the tropical ocean near Vanuatu to the cool rivers of Tasmania. Blending original music, underwater sound recordings, visuals, science and storytelling, it explores our enduring fascination with these remarkable creatures.
Discover the eel's profound influence on human history, from the extensive eel aquaculture systems at Budj Bim to Aristotle spurring a 2,300-year search for their spawning grounds. The complex relationship between humans and eels continues to this day, with Tasmania's modern hydro and export industries and recent first successful breeding programs in Japan.
With freshwater eel populations threatened in many parts of the world, we explore how we can best live alongside these mysterious creatures.
