Honouring Country: Celebrating NAIDOC Week in the Blue Mountains

NAIDOC Week is a time to come together and recognise the histories, cultures, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Here in the Blue Mountains, it’s also a time to listen deeply, learn more and reflect on the legacy of the Gundungurra and Darug peoples, the Traditional Custodians of the region, whose stories, knowledge and care continue to shape this sacred place.

The theme for NAIDOC Week 2025 is The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy. It speaks to the enduring strength, spirit and leadership of First Nations communities, celebrating 50 years of First Nations pride, presence and power. It’s a time to celebrate culture and to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across generations past, present, and emerging.

Take part in NAIDOC Week with events happening throughout the Blue Mountains. Festivities begin Sunday, 6 July at the Blue Mountains Theatre & Community Hub in Springwood with a Welcome and Smoking Ceremony, Wagana Dancers, live music, family-friendly activities and a free community lunch (bookings essential). This inclusive community event is open to all ages and offers a powerful opportunity to connect with culture and community.

On Monday, 7 July, join the flag-raising ceremony in Katoomba’s Carrington Place at 10 am. From 5–13 July, the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre will offer free entry and a full program, including the Emerging NAIDOC exhibition and a Community Day with hands-on activities on Saturday 12 July. Find out more about the events here.

This is a time to spend a moment on Country, to walk the land respectfully, reflect on clifftops, and consider the stories embedded in the escarpments and valleys. The Blue Mountains are more than a place of natural beauty; they’re a living cultural landscape shaped by tens of thousands of years of continuous care and connection.

Looking for a meaningful way to connect with Country? Join Buunyal; a guided tour with one of the Buunyal Indigenous Cultural Guides. It’s a chance to slow down, listen, and see the escarpments through First Nations eyes. Hear stories and learn about culture passed down through generations, rooted in deep respect for the land. Book your tickets here.

Celebrate culture, Country and community this NAIDOC Week in the Blue Mountains. From powerful performances to hands-on experiences, it’s a chance to deepen your connection, honour First Nations stories, and stand alongside the next generation of leaders shaping a stronger future.
