The National Trust (NSW)’s Everglades House and Gardens is a must-see for lovers of Art Deco architecture and heritage gardens.
Description
Located on Dharug and Gundungurra Country in Leura, this unique place in the Blue Mountains is considered Australia’s most spectacular inter-war period garden, designed in the 1930s by master cold climate gardener, Paul Sorensen. Best known for its terraced formal layouts, winding paths, and dry-stone walls, the design incorporates both native bushland and beautiful Blue Mountains vistas at every turn. From striking displays of autumn colours to blooming cherry blossoms and tulips in spring, there is something magical to enjoy at Everglades in every season.
The house itself is a fine example of the decadence and grandeur of Art Deco, fully restored in 2023 by the National Trust. Experience stepping back in time as you explore the extravagant bathrooms, modernist bedrooms, and sweeping Art Deco staircase.
Visitors are welcome to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy beneath the trees in the Glades or relax among the terraces. The Tea Rooms, situated in the Art Deco house, has some of the best homemade Devonshire teas in the Blue Mountains. The menu includes a range of savoury and sweet treats to enjoy. Other highlights of the property include exhibitions by local artists in the gallery, and a calendar of events throughout the year.
