Katoomba may draw its fair share of crowds with some of the region’s most iconic sights, but beyond the Three Sisters lie plenty of lesser-known gems just waiting to be discovered.
As winter settles in, grab your coat and beanie, hop on a train, and explore some of the most picturesque villages the upper Blue Mountains has to offer.
Medlow Bath

The first stop on your journey offers the chance to take in the renowned Hydro Majestic Hotel. Perched dramatically above the Megalong Valley, this grand historic hotel has been welcoming visitors since the early 1900s and remains one of the Blue Mountains’ most recognisable landmarks.
From its terraces and balconies, enjoy sweeping vistas, and on crisp winter mornings watch the mist rolling gently along the cliffs.
After soaking up the views, grab a coffee at the Boiler House or the Pavilion Cafe, or cross the highway via the snazzy new bridge for brunch at Potbelly.
A gentle wander along the village streets, past cute cottages and leafy corners, provides a peaceful introduction to mountain life.
Blackheath
Next up is Blackheath, with its quaint village vibes, award-winning dining, and plenty of boutiques and galleries for those wanting a keepsake or simply to admire the local wares.
Blackheath is the perfect stop for lunch, with a dining scene that punches well above its weight. For a cozy cafe lunch or coffee try Hounslow, Blackheath Deli, Altitude or Sanquinary. If you’re looking to treat yourself to a full dining experience Blaq, Frankie and Mo’s, and Ates serve some of the finest cuisine the mountains has to offer.
Beyond the cafes and restaurants, Blackheath’s main street is dotted with bookshops, vintage stores and local galleries, making it easy to while away time discovering hidden art pieces or handcrafted goods.
For those seeking nature and with a few hours to spare, Popes Glen track takes you from the village, as it winds through lush bushland and finishes at one of the most spectacular vantage points in the Blue Mountains, Govetts Leap lookout.
Mount Victoria
At the final town on the itinerary, you’ll find Mount Vic Flicks, a charming historic cinema and the perfect place to unwind for the afternoon. Built in the 1930s, it offers a nostalgic glimpse into a bygone era of film.
If you’re not in the mood for a movie, grab a drink at the beautiful Victoria and Albert Guesthouse, browse Mount Vic and Me and Cobweb Collectables, or take a leisurely stroll around the village and admire the local character.
For more of the famous Blue Mountains views, head to Mount Piddington lookout to take in the green pastures and eucalypt forests of the Kanimbla Valley or venture along the historic Fairy Bower trail with its hidden caves - all walking distance from the train station.
Beyond Mount Victoria
If you have a little more time, extend your stay and explore the iconic Zig Zag Railway. Winding through dramatic cliffs and sandstone cuttings, the restored heritage railway offers panoramic views and a glimpse into the region’s rich history, making for an unforgettable adventure.
