A 50th birthday celebration does not usually call for a walk from Penrith to Lithgow, visiting schools along the way but the 50th anniversary of the Blue Mountains National Park it certainly did.

Sixteen schools and hundreds of children across the Blue Mountains from Penrith through to Lithgow, during September 2009, participated in this exciting event, a community celebration of the natural and cultural landscapes of the Blue Mountains National Park. As it so happens two coinciding celebrations were also recognised, the 200th anniversary of Australia Post and the birth of Charles Darwin, who visited the Blue Mountains in 1836.

The bush-postie visited schools along the way collecting and delivering the postcards made by the children. As a conclusion of the celebratory walk, all the postcards are on display from 4th December at Blackheath’s Heritage Centre and from the 7th December until end January, will go on display at Katoomba & Springwood Library & Glenbrook & Katoomba Visitor Information Centres.
